Welcome to ALS 101!
Academic and Life Success 101 is a class to help students succeed in life and academic endeavors by teaching skills that they can apply to their daily obstacles. I have put together an ePortfolio to show what kind of activities ALS 101 will be covering such as Goal Setting, The Morning Pages, Stephen Covey's Habits, and Learning to Learn. I believe Goal Setting is very important to start off with since that is the first step to being successful. Once you have figured out what your goals are, you can use the other skills to help you move towards your goal. Feed back is also a big part of ALS 101 and is a very big lesson as well. The Morning Pages was a great example of constructive feedback and that is why I added this topic to my ePortfolio. I also cover one of Stephen Covey's Habits just to introduce someone that you will become familiar with as you go through this class. I will start with the first one because I believe that the first habit will encourage you to get through this class.
The midterm presentation that I included in my ePortfolio covers Stephen Covey's third habit: First Things First and the lesson: Learning to Learn. Incorporating the two skills helped us educate others of the big mess that we used for our midterm: poverty. You will see a link on the website that will take you to another website where I made a version of our midterm. The midterm gave me a chance to work with my peers. It was a great experience and it taught me to trust others. Being patient was also exercised while we were working on our midterm. All in all, I believe our team became a bit closer to each other which gave us a better connection to finish the midterm.
In my ePortfolio, there is a page dedicated to the Research Resource assignment I chose as the one skill that helped me that most from this class. It is about goal setting; how to do it and how to keep it up. There is a copy of my Redesign Assignment for my final on that page. I highly suggest you try it. Managing priorities effectively is part of goal setting. After you figure out what your goals are, you must prioritize them. We did not do a week about reducing stress but I did do my own research on it since it was one of the problems I wanted to fix with this class. Even after taking the 7th Profile test, my life balance score went down because of being stressed out. Hopefully, you will get to have it as a lesson this semester! I also mentioned that for our midterm project we used the skill Learning to Learn. I posted an assignment for this skill about going out and spending a day with someone who has the career you are going for to learn more about it.
In ALS 101, you will face sporadic deadlines. This will teach you how to react to the hectic life of college. It will test your time management skills. You will be doing a lot of researching on the web so learn to use google.com! This class will also teach you to give and receive criticism and compliments. All assignments come with assigned articles to read so you will be exercising your comprehension skills as well. Be sure to write good notes and fully understand what you are reading. This class will encourage you to use any and all outside resources including campus resources, so please take advantage of them! Unfortunately, this was the only resource that I did not find helpful for me in this class. Most of the time the department is understaffed and not always available. It is specially inconvenient for students like me who have no transportation. But if it is not an obstacle for you then you should definitely use it. I find that knowing and having creative and critical thinking coming into the class will help you a lot. For each assignment, you will also be asked to create an assignment for your peers pertaining to the lesson. Please be as creative as you can be, it's nice to have options. This will be the only class that you can choose your own assignments to do!
This class will take you for a loop at first. It will be challenging and confusing. The only advice that I would like you to never forget is: DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK QUESTIONS! Ask your peers, ask the teacher, ask other teachers .. if you don't understand something, don't guess. More information means less likely to not miss anything. Good luck and get proactive!
